Wisdom tooth extraction

Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure to remove third set of molars— the four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of your mouth on the top and bottom. They usually come in between the ages of 17 and 25.

If a wisdom tooth doesn't have room to grow (impacted wisdom tooth), resulting in pain, infection or other dental problems, you'll likely need to have it removed. To prevent potential future problems, dentists recommend wisdom tooth extraction even if impacted teeth not causing any discomfort or pain.

Reasons for removal of wisdom tooth:

Impacted:  Impacted wisdom tooth becomes stuck below the surface of your gums and don't have enough room to emerge or develop normally because they're so far back in the mouth and can be trapped in your jawbone or gums, which can be painful.

Unfavorable position: - They may press against your other teeth or can be erupting towards backward or inward. This result in development of tilted, angled or crooked wisdom tooth, ultimately causing crowding, jaw-pain, decreased mouth opening and it becomes troublesome in longer run as it causes dental cyst/tumors.

Small jaw size: - Sometimes your jaw size is small to incorporate extra set of molars and malformed third molars.

Improper maintenance of oral hygiene: -Sometimes you may not be able to reach your wisdom teeth with your toothbrush or dental floss. Incompletely erupted teeth can lead to pocket formation where food, bacterial plaque and calculus tend to collect and chances of dental caries increases.
