Say Goodbye to "Metal Mouth"

Technology is awesome. First our phones went wireless, then our computers, and now our braces have gone wireless! You can have the beautiful, straight smile you've always wanted without the embarrassment and discomfort of wearing old-fashioned wire and bracket metal braces!
Invisalign is the invisible way to straighten teeth. It is a system that uses a series of unnoticeable custom-made aligners to gradually straighten your smile. Whether you have large gaps between your teeth or overcrowding, Invisalign can work for you.

Invisalign are removable, clear trays. Gradually your teeth will be moved week by week, millimeter by millimeter, until you have the straight, beautiful smile you've always dreamed of!

Invisalign aligners are so much more comfortable than traditional metal braces. Because they are removable, you can take them out to eat and brush your teeth. This leaves you free to enjoy all of your favorite foods. Since the aligners are removable there are no restrictions or off-limits foods as there are with traditional metal braces. You can take your aligners out at any time to enjoy a snack or special occasion. You can brush your teeth and floss as usual so your teeth and gums stay healthy during treatment. You can smile without holding back! There is no reason to be self-conscious about wearing your Invisalign aligners since they are nearly undetectable. No one has to know you are straightening your teeth until, of course, they see your wonderful result and then they will ask you how you transformed your smile!

Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Trigeminal neuralgia is the most common facial pain syndrome. It is characterized by a sudden attack of facial pain described as intense, sharp, like an electric-shock, or stabbing. The pain is most commonly felt in the cheekbone, most of the nose, upper lip and upper teeth and, in some people, it also extends to the lower lip, and chin. Pain is usually felt on one side of the face and lasts from a few seconds to two minutes. Trigeminal neuralgia is the most frequently occurring nerve pain disorder.

The trigeminal nerve is the 5th and largest of the cranial nerves. It provides nerve sensation to the face, mouth, and the front of the scalp as well as controlling the muscles involved in chewing.

The average age of onset is between 50 and 70 years old, though it can be seen in younger people as well. The incidence of trigeminal neuralgia gradually increases with age. Almost twice as many women are affected by trigeminal neuralgia as men.

The primary goals of treatment for patients with trigeminal neuralgia include:
Controlling the symptoms.
Relieving severe facial pain.
The surgical treatment options that are available for patients with intractable trigeminal neuralgia that cannot be adequately controlled with medications.

Metal Dentures

Removable Partial Dentures with cast metal frameworks offer advantages over the conventional dentures commonly used. The frameworks of these dentures are cast to fit the teeth. Since they sit on the teeth, as well as being attached to them, they are extremely stable and retentive. The metal framework does not contact the gums. Thus rarely requires adjustments. Modern frameworks are cast from an extremely strong alloy which can be cast very thin and are much less likely to break than the all plastic variety. They are also much less noticeable to the tongue. The advantage is that sore spots are almost never an issue since neither the framework nor the plastic extensions contact the soft oral tissues with any force. Patients who has TM Joint problems or who are known bruxers are much better off with cast metal partials than with plastic partials.

Sealant acts as a barrier...

A sealant is a clear shaded plastic material that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars
and molars), where decay occurs most often. This sealant acts as a barrier, protecting the decay prone areas of the tooth from plaque and acid. Each tooth only takes a few minutes to seal.

Children receive significant benefits from sealants, adults can also be at risk for pit and fissure decay and thus be candidates for sealants. Sealants are also recommended even for those who receive topical applications of fluoride and who live in communities with fluoridated water.

When the sealant is applied, finger-like strands penetrate the pits and fissures of the tooth enamel. Although the sealant cannot be seen with the naked eye, the protective effect of these strands continues. As a result, it may be several years before another application of sealant is needed. Reapplication of the sealants will continue the protection against decay and may save the time and expense of having a tooth restored. Sealants will be checked during regular dental visits to determine if reapplication is necessary.

With the sealant deep within the pits and grooves of the enamel surface, normal eating habits can be maintained. Twice a day brushing is very important to maximize the benefits of the sealants.

DRUG teeth staining

Tetracycline is an antibiotic that is effective against many infections and used sometimes to treat Acne, urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, etc.
Taking Tetracycline during pregnancy affects the development of the bone and the teeth in the developing baby. As Tetracycline has a negative effect on the calcification process in the bone and the teeth, this result in the baby teeth being discoloured and the permanent teeth suffering from enamel hypoplasia (incomplete development of the enamel).
The critical period for calcification begins at the fourth month of pregnancy and ends twelve months after birth. Therefore, pregnant women should avoid taking the drug after the sixteenth week in the pregnancy and throughout the breast-feeding period.
Whitening could improve the appearance of your teeth but is often not enough to reach the desired result. Covering the teeth with crowns or veneers is preferable is the right choice of treatment.
Make sure you inform you dentist or doctor that you are pregnant before taking any medication.

What Is a Cleft Lip or Cleft Palate?

A cleft lip is an upper lip that is split. Like a cleft palate, it is caused by the failure of the two sides of the face to unite properly while the baby is in the womb. Although no one knows exactly why clefts happen, they have a tendency to run in families. Hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, and certain drugs when used during pregnancy are possible causes.

A cleft palate occurs when there is a direct opening between the palate, or roof of the mouth, and the floor of the nose. During pregnancy, the baby's upper jaw fails to close as it should, leaving a gap. A cleft palate is a more serious condition than a cleft lip, although both require surgery in order to be corrected.

Eating, breathing, speech and psychological problems are some of the difficulties confronted by the child with a cleft lip or palate. To correct the condition, you will likely work with a team involving a plastic surgeon, maxillofacial surgeon, otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist), general dentist, orthodontist and oral surgeon.

Replace Missing Teeth With Implants

The use of dental implants to replace teeth lost to an accident, gum diseases or tooth decay is becoming popular.

To place an implant, Implantologist open the gum to expose the jawbone and then drills a small hole in the bone for the metal cylinder that serves as the implant. All this is done when the patient is under local anaesthesia. It takes three months [pain less] for the area to heal and for the implant to fuse with the jawbone.

Patient may undergo a second procedure after three months, in which an abutment is attached or screwed down into the implant.

In the final step, the dentist attaches a realistic-looking artificial tooth to the implant. The entire process takes about four months.

A big advantage of the method is that an implant acts as a substitute for the roots of a natural tooth.

What to Do When a Tooth Falls after an Accident?

The accidental loss of a tooth is a serious situation but it can be resolved if we act quickly. A tooth that fell out must be re-implanted in its socket within 60 minutes after the accident for best chances for it to remain in position.
Instructions to follow: If the tooth is dirty, it is important that the patient cleans it with his own saliva by putting it in his mouth. The tooth should then be removed from the mouth and the patient should spit all blood and dirt. While spitting hard, you can remove the blood clot that could have formed in the socket, which can make the re-implantation of the tooth easier. When the tooth is clean enough, it should be quickly put in the socket. The more it is done quickly, the better are the chances of success.

If the tooth cannot be repositioned in its place for one reason or another, then it should be transported to the dentist as soon as possible. There are several ways to do so.

The tooth should be cleaned with saliva as described above. The person who had the accident must then keep the tooth in his or her mouth, either under the tongue or between the cheek and back teeth, of course without chewing on it. If it’s a young child under the age of eight who has lost his tooth, it should not be kept in his mouth because he can swallow it. After cleaning with saliva, the tooth can rather be put it in a saline solution (water and salt) or in a cup of fresh milk, preferably at room temperature.

If the tooth re-implantation does not work, it is preferable to extract the tooth and have it replaced.

Intrauterine infection is recognized as a main cause of pre-term birth as well as late miscarriage and still birth. Growth Modification

Growth modification appliances are used to enhance or reduce the growth of the jaw in a forward or backward direction. It can also be designed to allow expansion to the upper arch. These appliances help correct the front-to-back relationship of the upper and lower jaws, thereby correcting the overbite. These types of appliances are stay in mouth for 4 to 18 months.

Growth modification (early treatment) is part of the first phase of two-stage orthodontic treatment of children with malocclusion (poor bite). Growth modification is only possible when bones are still growing. It is most effective during children's growth spurts (for girls upto 12 yrs and for boys upto 14 yrs). Ideal timing of treatment varies depending on the condition, when adult teeth come in, and the amount of growth necessary to correct the malocclusion. Children are often more cooperative than teenagers when it comes to wearing their appliances for a certain number of hours a day.Surgery is the only option to correct malocclusion once growth is complete.

Oral care during chemotherapy and radiation therapy:

Continuing good dental hygiene during and after cancer treatment can reduce complications such as cavities, mouth sores, and infections. It is important to clean the mouth after eating. The following are guidelines for everyday

1. Brush teeth with a soft bristle brush 2 to 3 times a day for 2 to 3 minutes. Be sure to brush the area where the teeth meet the gums and rinse often.
2.Rinse the toothbrush in hot water every 15 to 30 seconds to soften the bristles, if needed.
3. Use a foam brush only if a regular bristle brush cannot be used. Brush 2 to 3 times a day and use an antibacterial rinse. Rinse often.
4. Allow the toothbrush to air dry between brushings.
5. Use a mild-tasting toothpaste; flavoring may irritate the mouth. If toothpaste irritates the mouth, brush with a solution of 1 teaspoon of salt added to 4 cups (1 quart) of water.
6. If dry mouth occurs, rinsing may not be enough to clean the teeth after a meal. Brushing and flossing may be needed.
7. Floss gently once a day.
8. Use lip care products to prevent drying and cracking.

Breast cancer - Should I check in with my dentist?

If chemotherapy is part of a treatment plan for breast cancer, she should schedule a regular cleaning with her dentist before starting treatment. Most chemotherapy agents will suppress white cells, which protect against infection. And that increases the risk of doing an invasive procedure, such as a tooth extraction or deep cleaning, will cause infection. Usually about a week after each treatment dental checkup is must. During this period, oncologist can advise her and her dentist about when it would be safe to do a dental procedure. Breast cancer patients should maintain good hygiene — brushing, rinsing and flossing — throughout their treatment.
If a woman has breast cancer and is treated by surgery or by radiation but not chemotherapy, the mouth is not affected in any way.

Harmful Effects of Smoking

One in two lifetime smokers will die from their habit. Half of these deaths will occur in middle age. Tobacco smoke also contributes to a number of cancers. The mixture of nicotine and carbon monoxide in each cigarette you smoke temporarily increases your heart rate and blood pressure, straining your heart and blood vessels. This can cause heart attacks and stroke. It slows your blood flow, cutting off oxygen to your feet and hands. Some smokers end up having their limbs amputated. Tar coats your lungs like soot in a chimney and causes cancer. A 20-a-day smoker breathes in up to a full cup (210 g) of tar in a year. Changing to low-tar cigarettes does not help because smokers usually take deeper puffs and hold the smoke in for longer, dragging the tar deeper into their lungs. Carbon monoxide robs your muscles, brain and body tissue of oxygen, making your whole body and especially your heart work harder. Over time, your airways swell up and let less air into your lungs. Smoking causes disease and is a slow way to die. The strain of smoking effects on the body often causes years of suffering. Emphysema is an illness that slowly rots your lungs. People with emphysema often get bronchitis again and again, and suffer lung and heart failure. Lung cancer from smoking is caused by the tar in tobacco smoke. Men who smoke are ten times more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smokers. Heart disease and strokes are also more common among smokers than non-smokers. Smoking causes fat deposits to narrow and block blood vessels which leads to heart attack. Smoking causes around one in five deaths from heart disease. In younger people, three out of four deaths from heart disease are due to smoking. Cigarette smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of low birth weight, prematurity, spontaneous abortion, and perinatal mortality in humans, which has been referred to as the fetal tobacco syndrome.

Foods That Keep Your Smile Beautiful

Popularly known as the "white smile diet", it includes a lot of citrus fruits and vegetables. But like every other diet, there are restrictions if you want to use the white diet to brighten your pearly whites. Avoid drinking dark syrup sodas, red wine and coffees as they tend to stain your teeth very quickly.

Here's a list of foods which will help keep your teeth beautiful:

Rub strawberries on your teeth and watch them shine. They naturally whiten teeth. However, you need to thoroughly clean your teeth after that, or it could cause tooth decay and enamel erosion too.
A paste comprising dried orange peel and bay leaves will leave your teeth white and bright.
Occasional use of lime juice on your teeth works well too.
Vegetables like carrots, cauliflower and other crunchy fruits and vegetables are a great choice to brighten your teeth because the natural fibers in these with the saliva present in your mouth help get rid of food particles and bacteria.
Apple cider vinegar is a great whitening agent for your teeth too. You can choose to gargle it or use baking soda to make a paste and brush it on your teeth.
However, don't expect instant results with the white smile diet.Professional teeth whitening treatments are the best solution for quick results.

Traumatic Ulcers

Traumatic injuries involving the oral cavity may typically lead to the formation of surface ulcerations. The injuries may result from events such as accidentally biting oneself while talking, sleeping or secondary to mastication. Other forms of mechanical trauma, as well as chemical, electrical, or thermal insults, may also be involved. In addition, fractured, carious, malposed, or malformed teeth, as well as the premature eruption of teeth, can contribute to the formation of surface ulcerations.Nocturnal parafunctional habits, such as bruxism and thumb sucking, may be associated with the development of traumatic ulcers of the buccal mucosa, the labial mucosa, the lateral borders of the tongue, and the palate.
Surface ulcerations usually heal within 10-14 days, but occasionally, they may persist for a significantly longer time due to systemic factors. Healing of the ulcerated mucosa is usually delayed when the lesions overlie the bony areas of jaws.

Treatment modalities for ulcerations include the following:
Removal of the irritants or cause
Use of a soft mouth guard
Use of sedative mouth rinses
Consumption of a soft, bland diet
Use of warm sodium chloride rinses
Application of topical anesthetics and medications
