Does dental implant requires maintenance?

YES! Since dental implants are intended to function similarly to natural teeth, proper oral hygiene, routine dental examinations, and an awareness of one's overall oral health are all important components of their maintenance.

In order to avoid issues like peri-implantitis, a disorder that affects the tissues surrounding the dental implants need to be properly maintained. Frequent maintenance ensures the overall health of the oral cavity and helps maintain the integrity of the implant.

Dental implant maintenance!

A.      Professional cleaning:-

Sonic and ultrasonic scalers-

Dental implants are scaled around using metal sonic and ultrasonic instruments with specific attachments, such as nylon sleeves and plastic inserts. This method effectively cleans the implant while causing the least amount of harm. Short working strokes with little pressure are necessary due to the perimucosal seal's delicate nature.

B.      Home Care and Maintenance:-

1.       Manual toothbrushes-

Manual toothbrushes with bristles made of synthetic material and rounded ends are recommended for implants because implants are considerably more sensitive in terms of erosion through mechanical force. A medium-sized short-head soft toothbrush is ideally preferred for the cleaning of dental implants. Brushes with hollow bristles should not be used, as they act as niches for bacterial colonization and growth. The modified bass technique of brushing is to be followed.
Tufted brush easily maneuvers in hard-to-reach areas and may be bent to accommodate patient needs. Especially useful in posterior lingual regions where a conventional toothbrush might not reach.

2.       Mechanical toothbrushes-
They are superior to manual brushes, as they are better in plaque removal. Automated mechanical tooth brush is suggested as a daily mode of tooth cleansing. These devices may have rotary, reciprocating or sonic action.

3.       Dental floss-
Patients usually find difficulty in cleaning the interdental areas. Dental floss acts as an effective aid in such cases. Appliance has a textured surface designed to carry medicaments to the implant surface and surrounding tissues. Gentle insertion and motion is advocated to avoid trauma to the tissue.

4.       Interproximal brushes-

They should be used by implant patients only after being shown their proper use. They are available with interchangeable tips of various shapes. The brushes may have an exposed tip of metal wire that can scratch the titanium surface of the abutment and if enough pressure is exerted or if the brushes are worn, the wire can scratch the implant or abutment surface. Hence they are to be used with caution. Plastic coated wire brush is recommended to sort out this problem.

5.       Antimicrobials-
Use of an antimicrobial mouth rinse, such as chlorhexidine gluconate or Listerine has been found to be effective means of maintaining oral care. They help in reducing plaque around
the implants. Long term uses of antimicrobials such a chlorhexidine gluconate and cetylpiridium chloride or phenolic compounds tend to cause staining. Hence they are recommended to be used along with brushes and floss to reduce staining.

Lasers in Endodontic Therapy!

In recent decades, the emergence of lasers in dentistry has proven to be highly beneficial.

In traditional root canal treatment, there is cleaning and disinfection of root canals. But with this approach, you might not achieve complete disinfection. It may sometimes lead to re-infection and failure of the whole process. However, with lasers, complete root canal disinfection is now possible. Mainly, the Laser is utilized for decreasing the infection and developing a sterile atmosphere in the infected root canals.

A laser-assisted root canal is one of the most innovative accomplishments in dentistry. It has helped in overcoming the flaws of traditional root canal treatment.

How a root canal treatment is performed using Laser Dentistry?

In a laser-assisted root canal treatment, the dentist uses irrigation along with instrumentation to remove the debris or dead tissue. After, which a parallel beam of light is passed into the root canals. The intense light energy helps kill the bacteria in the root canal and eliminates all debris and dead tissues, disinfecting the root canals. Then the hollow section is filled up with cement lining along with root canal sealers, and the tooth is then capped.

The whole process takes significantly less time, is more effective, and is painless when compared with the traditional root canal process. In addition, it is less invasive and makes the foundation for achieving long-term success in root canal treatment.

Benefits you get from laser-assisted root canal therapy

·         The procedure is less aggressive, and painless and decreases postoperative complications such as swelling, bleeding, and pain.

·         The whole process takes significantly less time; with proper disinfection which helps reduce the number of visits to the hospital.

·         Lasers help attain good disinfection of the root canals and help us in ensuring high success rates.

·         As the whole process is less invasive, it leads to fast healing.
The chance of infection and contamination is significantly less because of lasers.
