One of the most important aspects of the dental office is
treatment unit (dental chair) because good dental chair plays important role in
prevention of cross contamination during treatment. There are several things
that has to be taken into consideration.
Some of these considerations are, it should be free of bacteria and
germs prior to each treatment. Water coming through treatment unit into the
patient’s mouth should be clean. Suction unit should be such that it should
prevent cross contamination. To prevent tissue damage, the equipments used in the
treatment units should produce less heat. Last but not the least; it should be
comfortable to patient and dentist.
So the patient should be aware of all these things and
inquire before getting treated.
Chair should have a turbine unit that provides protection
mechanism against back suction phenomenon which prevents the back suction. Also
it maintains quality of water(RO) coming through the treatment unit.
Following are some of the diseases which can spread through
cross contamination during dental treatment. Saliva is considered to be one of
the most common mediums that diseases choose as their mode of spread.
Cold sores are caused by Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1).
HIV and hepatitis B Virus (HBV) are blood-borne infections
that have been found in the saliva. Hepatitis B virus through saliva has been
well documented, as well as hepatitis A and C.
Epstein-Barr virus, or EBV, is a common herpes virus that
causes many diseases. Once infected, the Epstein-Barr virus stays in the body
for life.
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) spreads via oral transmission from
virus-containing saliva. The virus remains in the body usually in a dormant
state.
Influenza is a highly contagious viral respiratory
disease. It easily passes from an infected person through any contact with
saliva.
Viral meningitis is highly contagious which causes inflammation
of the linings that cover the spinal cord and the brain.
All dental chairs at TCC are equipped with latest
technology and fulfill all above criteria.
