Prolonged Thumb Sucking In Infants May Lead To Speech Impediments

Using a pacifier for too long may be detrimental to your child's speech. Research published in the open access journal BMC Pediatrics suggests that the use of bottles, pacifiers and other sucking behaviors apart from breast-feeding may increase the risk of subsequent speech disorders in young children.

"These results suggest extended use of sucking outside of breast-feeding may have detrimental effects on speech development in young children,". This finding is particularly relevant, as use of bottles and pacifiers has increased dramatically over the last few decades.

How Does Tobacco Affect?

Tobacco contain the addictive drug nicotine. Nicotine is readily absorbed into the bloodstream when a tobacco product is chewed, inhaled, or smoked. Upon entering the bloodstream, nicotine immediately stimulates the adrenal glands to release the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline). Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and increases blood pressure, respiration, and heart rate. Glucose is released into the blood while nicotine suppresses insulin output from the pancreas, which means that smokers have chronically elevated blood sugar levels. Nicotine increases levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which affects the brain pathways that control reward and pleasure. Smoking causes cancer of the lung, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, pancreas, kidney, bladder and cervix. Recent evidence links smoking with cancer of large intestine and some forms of leukemia. Smoking has a direct effect on the growth of the fetus. The more the mother smokes during pregnancy, the lower the weight of the newborn infant.

All smokers are at extra risk for:Coronary heart disease, Peripheral vascular disease, Aortic aneurysm, High cholesterol, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Chronic bronchitis, Emphysema, Pneumonia, Influenza, The common cold, Peptic ulcers, Chronic bowel disease, Tooth decay, Gum disease, Osteoporosis, Sleep problems, Cataracts, Thyroid disease

When an addicted user tries to quit, he or she experiences withdrawal symptoms including irritability, attention difficulties, sleep disturbances, increased appetite, and powerful cravings for tobacco.

Cross contamination through dental chair

One of the most important aspects of the dental office is treatment unit (dental chair) because good dental chair plays important role in prevention of cross contamination during treatment. There are several things that has to be taken into consideration.  Some of these considerations are, it should be free of bacteria and germs prior to each treatment. Water coming through treatment unit into the patient’s mouth should be clean. Suction unit should be such that it should prevent cross contamination. To prevent tissue damage, the equipments used in the treatment units should produce less heat. Last but not the least; it should be comfortable to patient and dentist.

So the patient should be aware of all these things and inquire before getting treated.

Chair should have a turbine unit that provides protection mechanism against back suction phenomenon which prevents the back suction. Also it maintains quality of water(RO) coming through the treatment unit.

Following are some of the diseases which can spread through cross contamination during dental treatment. Saliva is considered to be one of the most common mediums that diseases choose as their mode of spread.

Cold sores are caused by Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1).

HIV and hepatitis B Virus (HBV) are blood-borne infections that have been found in the saliva. Hepatitis B virus through saliva has been well documented, as well as hepatitis A and C.

Epstein-Barr virus, or EBV, is a common herpes virus that causes many diseases. Once infected, the Epstein-Barr virus stays in the body for life.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) spreads via oral transmission from virus-containing saliva. The virus remains in the body usually in a dormant state.

Influenza is a highly contagious viral respiratory disease. It easily passes from an infected person through any contact with saliva.

Viral meningitis is highly contagious which causes inflammation of the linings that cover the spinal cord and the brain.

All dental chairs at TCC are equipped with latest technology and fulfill all above criteria.
