We all know, children in the age group of 1-14 years are prone to falls and many traumatic injuries while learning to walk, run ,co-ordination exercises and while playing sports .Traumatic dental injuries accounts up to 17% of total dental trauma among children globally.

Traumatic injuries in toddlers is unpredictable and most commonly happening in home, playground directly or indirectly impacting the tooth and jaws resulting in

·         Fracture of teeth

·         Crushing of bones

·         Soft tissues injuries like contusion , laceration and abrasion

·         Popping out of tooth from socket

·         Intrusion and extrusion of tooth

·         Injuries to upper and lower lips

In most cases, tooth and mouth injuries are not life threatening and immediate measures can reduce the complexities. Most common dental trauma occurs in upper jaw and front tooth, luxation of tooth being the most common injury in children.

Management of dental trauma in kids: The main goal of management is full recovery of involved tooth and surrounding tissues. When injury occurs, first aid should be immediately provided coupled with timely examination by oral health professionals. The permanent avulsed tooth can be re-implanted back to the tooth socket if preserved by the one in the following

·         Saliva of the child in the mouth itself under tongue

·         Hank’s balance salt solution marketed as SAVE-A-TOOTH

·         Coconut water

·         Cold raw milk

The tooth shouldn’t be thrown, scrapped and washed, but immediately brought to dentist for re-implantation. Note- primary tooth is not re-implanted but permanent tooth re-implantation can be done. The fractured tooth can be restored by Filling or Root Canal Treatment after doing the initial check up. The laceration and abraded soft tissues can be treated by ointments and topical applicants along with detailed examination by physician.

Gum Depigmentation

Gum depigmentation: It is unique procedure which allows you to change or improve the natural color of the gum tissues surrounding your teeth resulting in perfectly healthy and natural coral pink color gums across your entire smile. Gum depigmentation is also known as gum whitening /gum bleaching which removes a thin top layer of the gum tissue, destroying the cells that produce melanin (responsible for dark color gums).

Hyper-pigmentation may be genetic or induced.  It is commonly seen among people from certain ethnic backgrounds, although this is not always the case. Dark gums can also be caused by chronic smoking, certain medications and an old restoration such as silver filling that seep into the gum tissues and tarnish the gums locally. In most cases they are completely healthy, but their appearance can easily be fixed by depigmentation procedure by experienced dental surgeon.
